Homophones are words that are pronounced the same but have different meanings, they may or may not be spelt the same. They have long been used as a device in wordplay games and as such are used regularly in crossword clues. I got the idea for the following quiz from an edition of University Challenge with each of the answers being the name of a town, the county of which is given along with the definition of the homophone.
